I’ve been writing a book for some years now that is a modern re-write of Jane Austen’s Northanger Abbey. It’s taking a long time, but I love the story so much. The thing I didn’t

count on with this new book is all the strange research I’ve had to do about snow and weather.

Without giving too much away, I’ve had to study…

  • How long it takes for a snowmobile to get from my main house in the story to another house in bad conditions? About 20 minutes.
  • What the weather is like in New York City (41-40 F), Connecticut (38-37 F), and New Jersey (40-43 F) at Christmas time?
  • How snowboarding compares to skiing in skill level: skiing is easier to learn but harder to master, and snowboarding harder to learn and easier to master.
  • What time the sun sets in New Jersey on Christmas Eve: approximately 4:33 p.m.
  • New York City, specifically Manhattan. All the maps! And Google Maps with the 360 camera views.

Yes, all this and more just to write a little book about poor Catherine Moorland hooking up with wealthy Henry Tilney. And now…back to the manuscript!
