Updates 5.14.13

Hello readers! Haven’t done an updates post since March! Geez… how time flies.

Before I get to my list (you know how I like to make lists!) I want to talk about an event I will be at very soon.

262028_4339737022987_40480368_n

Emerian Rich and other HorrorAddicts.net authors will be at this year’s BayCon. BayCon is the largest science fiction, fantasy, and horror convention in the San Francisco Bay Area. The convention takes place over Memorial Day weekend, starting on Friday afternoon May 24th, and ending Monday, May 27th.

Another topic on my list these days is my computer! It crashed, it came back, it crashed, it came back… now it is a Frankenstein-like creation, sewn together by my husband, that is actually working quite well now-thanks hubby! :). Good news, is it’s back and I didn’t lose any of the audio I created before the crash, bad news is that I lost about two months in the process of it turning evil on me! So… want to let you all know that the podcast projects Undecided (#4 in the Sweet Dreams series) and Artistic License are back on track. Also the print novels Star Struck and True Love (#2 & #3 in the Sweet Dreams series) are also back on track. I have one more project called Anime Girl that is in the Sweet Dreams world that will be coming out on Kindle soon. So, without further ado…. THE LIST!

LOOSE ENDS

  • Undecided, the 4th book in the Sweet Dreams Series is completed!  I still need a cover for this book! O.o And I am in the recording phase – Chapter 8. You can read a sneak peek here on the 7/7 challenge blogStill in the recording phase!
  • Star Struck and True Love – Inputting corrections right now so that I can send this off to the editor and have done with it! Hoping to get these two print novels out by the end of 2013!
  • I am also reading, One More Try, the 5th book in the Sweet Dreams Series. It is needing some adjustments because of the way Undecided ended up, but because I have basically the whole book written, it should be fast going. I would estimate I am about 6 10 Chapters in. Have not worked more on this yet. WILL! Want to get Undecided out and publish the 2nd and 3rd novels before I move on.
  • o.o I forgot about this story! I wonder where it is!? Found it! “This is a Demons do Bad Things on Halloween story. Challenging myself to stay under 1000 words. Can I do it?” I found it, I’m working on it. I would estimate it’s about at 800 words. I need to close it up before I go over. Still working on this one. It’s taken a back seat to the other publications I am working on right now.

NEW PROJECTS!

  • Northanger – still pumping away. Yep, haven’t touched this in awhile, but will get back to it soon.
  • Phantom – I wasn’t going to start this until WAY in the future, but I watched Love Never Dies and was immensely inspired to carry forward on this. Can’t get it out of my mind. I haven’t written any of the text yet, but the entire plot and character slam book few out of my pen onto the page at about 5000 words and counting. Seems like it will be a quick write, but only if I’m not distracted, which seems to happen so easily! Yikes… got distracted! I still love this story and you can read an excerpt here on the 7/7 challenge blog. It’s the second story blurb.

For all of you into the word count thing, I’ve updated my list to the left!
Happy reading!

Angry Music = Good Fight Scenes

I got a reader question that I thought I’d answer here. I think maybe it will be helpful to all of you writers looking for some angst!

Emerian,

I love your vampire series and am halfway through Artistic License. How do you gear up for a fight scene? Is there anything you do in particular that puts you in the fight state of mind? Thank you for writing. You’ve made me want to read again.

Josh

Josh, thank you so much! You don’t know what an email like this means to me. If I can put just a little pleasure into readers lives, I have done my job!

Now, on the conversation about how to get in gear for a fight scene, here is my secret. I have a list of songs and artists that I listen to whenever I am upset with someone or something. They are songs that help me release my anger without doing something stupid like slashing the jerk’s tires or punching him/her in the face.  When I encounter such a day, if I can I will write. I can usually get some really good fight scenes out of that. If I can’t write – like if I am on my way home from work in the car – I will listen to my angry music. This does two things…

  1. It lets me release my anger before I get home to my family.
  2. It stores those angry feelings in the songs for me later.

Have you ever heard a song on the radio and it reminded you instantly of a time in the past when you were in love or going through a death in the family? It’s the same concept.

I advise you to make your own “Angry Song” list, but to help out, I have listed a handful of mine. I invite you to comment on your favorite Angry Songs!

Blood in My Eyes – Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, Godsmack

Let the Bodies Hit the Floor – Drowning Pool

F*ck U – Lily Allen

The Way I Am – Eminem

Bullet in the Head – Rage Against the Machine

Sway – Coal Chamber

Down with the Sickness – Disturbed

Head Like a Hole – NIN

I’m with Stupid – Static-X

Everything About You – Ugly Kid Joe

Goodbye You Suck – Shiloh

The Box Challenge – 2013

boxAt the end of 2012, I read something somewhere (probably on Facebook) about putting all your accomplishments into a container for the year. At the end of the year, you pull them out and congratulate yourself on everything you accomplished.

As a creative overachiever, I am often weighed down with what I haven’t finished or what I still need to do. I never feel like living my life in the stressful  mile-a-minute way is constructive or complete. However, people who see me living my life and watch me complete things, constantly comment on how much I get done and wonder how I do it all.

So, for 2013, I will be putting in this fabulous box, everything I’ve completed for the year. My husband made me this awesome skull box and I’ve had it hanging around, wondering what to do with it – what special thing I could place in it. I am excited to merge this new “fun” task with my favorite box!

Are you going to do the same? Let me see your box and how you plan to use it.

p.s….. I’ve already got some things in it! Go me! 🙂

  • NEW PROJECTS!
    • LOVELY BRAND NEW-SPANKING NEWS!!! I am writing a short story in my Sweet Dreams world. It came to me and would not be denied. I’ve been typing it now every spare moment (not many of those) for about 2 weeks. I can’t tell you much, but the star’s name is Abbey and she is a manga/anime writer/artist. I can’t wait to break this one out. I’m planning it to be a short story, Kindle only for now.

The 7/7 Blog Challenge

Sandra Saidak, a writer and fellow BayCon member, recruited me for this blog challenge.

The rules are simple:

  • Post seven lines from p. 7 (or 77) of my work in progress
  • Thank Sandy for inviting me with a link back to her blog
  • And…. talk seven other writers into participating by posting seven lines from the appropriate pages of their works in progress, thanking/linking to me, posting the challenge rules, and finding seven other authors to carry on the chain.   Like a chain letter, but more fun!  This is more of a treat for the readers because you get to read something unpublished and perhaps learn about new authors, you don’t know about.

So I’ve been working on many things. It’s really hard to decide if I’m going to give you horror, romance, or something in between.  I decided to do both…

For my Sweet Dreamers / from Sweet Dreams 4, Undecided:

She put her hand under his shirt, touching his dragon tattoo.

“Is it still sore?”

“A little.” He took in a deep gulp of air as she stepped closer.

Staring into his jade green eyes, she moved her hand over the tattoo from waist to chest. His lips enticed her to move in for a kiss. As soon as their lips attached, he pulled her to him with such strength, she thought he might crush her.

***I dare Sweet Dreamers to guess who “she” is.***

For my Biters / Horror Addicts / from a new novel Phantom:

Like a raven startled from frosty branches by a fierce gust of wind, he burst backstage, tattered coat flapping behind him. His ebony hair hung in one long spike on the left side of his face, obscuring his eye, half of his nose and mouth.

Christine felt her breath catch in her throat, but she didn’t not know if it was from interest or horror.

His right eye flicked her way, an accusing stare meant only for her. And then he was gone, down the corridor and up the scaffolding before she could even blink.

“Who was that?” she asked, her breath returning in quick, shallow gasps.

“Just some theatre freak.”

Many thanks to Sandra Saidak, who can be found here:

  • I am also reading, One More Try, the 5th book in the Sweet Dreams Series. It is needing some adjustments because of the way Undecided ended up, but because I have basically the whole book written, it should be fast going. I would estimate I am about 3 Chapters in.
  • √  Still no word on the vampire short story, but submitted and waiting.
  • √  Finished the “Haunted Item” short story, but I was too late for the deadline because of my move. Grrr! However, the story is awesome, and I’m going to try to sell it somewhere else.
  • Dusk Warriors, the vampire sequel to Night’s Knights is still going on podcast. Almost done. I estimate 1-2 casts left to wrap that puppy up!
  • Still trucking on GothHaus 3, The Gothmazing Race on HorrorAddicts.net we are on Episode 5 and I need to get my butt in gear to finish the rest of the episodes!
  • Artistic License, I am deep in the editing phase of this one. I know a lot of you want this one “out already!” per your emails… I am working on it! The thing is, my editor gave me so much to think about I am rewriting chunks and you know what that means! More editing after!
  • √  The Wickeds anthology is complete! For sale here: THE WICKEDS
  • Horror Disaster Anthology is coming along nicely. New editor is actually doing her job (think of that!). I am really happy with her and the target of late 2012 seems to be pretty right on.
  • Yes, I’m adding something else to my list. This is a Demons do Bad Things on Halloween story. Challenging myself to stay under 1000 words. Can I do it?

  • Yet another thing… writing a 100 word story for HorrorAddicts.net’s 100 word story episode. Should be fun. Haven’t picked a topic yet, but I am sort of digging birds right now. Black shiny ones that can peck out your eyes and get caught in your hair. Think I have my topic. 🙂
  • Check out my guest blog post at Sandy Sadiak’s site about Three Ways New Authors Sabotage Themselves. She asked me to write 1 post and it turned into 2 – possibly 3! -.- See what I mean by trying to limit my word counts??? Impossible!

Do You Suffer From Sparkle Separation Syndrome?

Posts are coming about Baycon 2012, but I have to share my thoughts on this first.

I was sad to see the number of vampire sightings at Baycon go WAY down this year.

I think it might be Sparkle Separation Syndrome® or… SSS
This is what I’m calling the tendency for hard-core, old-time (traditional) vampire fans  distancing themselves from Twilight fans. Have you noticed this in your part of the world?

How I long for a good-ole powdered and fanged vampire Lestat sighting. Even a corny, caped Bela would be a refreshing change. There was only one fanged being at Baycon that I saw (without the wiskers and tails I mean) and he was steampunked. A good substitute, but still… I ache for my old buddies in ruffles and breeches.

I know some of you enjoy both the new sparkly vampires and the old, but for you who are doubting your place in vampire fandom because the glitter palefaces have taken over, please don’t despair.

There are still those of us who remember the good old days when buying a pair of fangs at a con was a cool thing. When vampires lurked in the dark and rose from motherland soil or red velvet coffins.

Please embrace your love of vampires, don’t turn away from it. We shall not allow one book/movie series to define us! We shall not back away from our most beloved undead and let the zombie infection take over. We shall grasp tightly to the blood dolls of the past and suck… suck like we’ve never sucked before.

April Updates

WTF happened? One moment it was the New Year and now suddenly it’s April!

For those of you who don’t know, I moved houses and now am in somewhat of a “dream” house. Of course, for my sky-is-the-limit dream house, we would now be living in a 10+ story high rise that we owned outright complete with a journal museum, writer’s store, and cafe’ down near Kearny and California Streets (remind me to tell you about that dream one day). However, this new house that we are living in is pretty damned cool for a single family. It’s also a house that me and my hubby used to walk by as penniless twenty-somethings and dream about living in. It’s not that we’re so much more refined or wealthy now, but we have amassed the socially acceptable amount of debt to make us a good credit risk. Try to wrap your head around THAT one!

Anyway, since I’ve been moving, I have had hardly any time to write… which, frankly, pisses me the hell off! If I can’t write a few pages… or even a chapter or two a night, I get rather grumpy. And I know you all are waiting on the next installment of…. whatever series you follow, so in effect, it pisses you the hell off too!

Well, I’m here to tell you that your grumpiness (and mine) should be short lived. My office is back in some-what working order and I have uncovered the magical box that contains all my current projects. So, soon, everything you love about me and my characters will be back.

Let me give you some status updates and then I can get on with writing! 🙂

  • Undecided, the 4th book in the Sweet Dreams Series is completed!  I have a few first readers working on it and I hope to start recording the podcast by the end of the summer.
  • Finally finished and submitted the vampire short story √ (no word on this yet)
  • In the middle of a “Haunted Item” short story. The book submission period is over, but I love the idea so much… I’m just hoping here. It’s set in flapper days.
  • Dusk Warriors, the vampire sequel to Night’s Knights is still going on podcast. I have no idea where I am with this… but I think I have about 3 chapters left to podcast.
  • We launched GothHaus 3, The Gothmazing Race on HorrorAddicts.net #72 (yes, we’re back!)
  • Artistic License, I am happy to say I have received the first edit from the editor and am excited to dig into it. It will be the next thing I accomplish, after The Wickeds anthology.
  • Almost done with The Wickeds anthology. I have edits to put in, the cover to fix and we’ll be in business. Supposed to release this month!
  • Horror Disaster Anthology, this puppy has been quite a trek. We’ve gone through 2 artists, 2 charities, and 2 editors… now, we should see something moving ahead. I am thinking Fall or Winter 2012. These authors have been waiting a long time and they deserve the book in print.

This is all. This is allllllll I have to do. So, I’m gonna get to it! 🙂
Love you all and thank you for the emails about new books and where my projects are. It really helps me get on task and reminds me that someone out there cares if I actually finish these things!

Happy reading!
